Doncamatic (All Played Out) feat. Daley – Gorillaz

I’ve been a fan of Gorillaz since about 2005. Technically 2003 when I heard Clint Eastwood but I didn’t really get into them until I bought Demon Days. That was one hell of an album back in high school. Different from anything on the radio, yet it was on the radio and people couldn’t ignore it. It was awesome. Then Plastic Beach was released (definitely one of the albums of the year) and I was extremely impressed. It’s hard not to love that album even though it is really different from the first two. I really didn’t think that Gorillaz could make anything bad, since everything I heard (aside from a few mediocre tracks on the self-titled) was pretty solid. Today, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett proved me wrong.

When I first heard Gorillaz were putting out a new single, I was excited as hell. Then I heard it was going to be a new song from the Plastic Beach sessions, and I got even more excited. Then I heard it, and I realized why it was left off the new album. It blows.

The beat had me for a bit. Then the vocals kicked in and I thought it could be a lite-version of “Dare”, a single off of Demon Days. But as the song progressed, I really started to dislike it. It sounds like generic pop. It sounds like a less shitty (but not really much better) version of Lady Gaga. What the hell Albarn?

I know Albarn stated that he wanted to make Plastic Beach a pop record (and it is, but a VERY good one at that), but please don’t tell me they want to keep exploring this avenue. I feel like they are going backwards this way and starting off with stuff that is too simplistic and too generic for their own good. If exploring pop produces work like this, they need to try something else.

I’m not going to jump ship on Gorillaz. Hell, if I did that for every good band that puts out a shitty single, I wouldn’t like very many bands anymore. I’m not saying that I’m not going to buy the next Gorillaz album or any of that either. I’m simply gonna get stoned and throw on Clint Eastwood or Rhinestone Eyes (which was supposed to be the new single and it should have been cause it’s fucking AWESOME) and try to forget about it. So yeah, Gorillaz still rule, but this single is a definitely a small skidmark on their awesome discography. Hopefully, they don’t make a habit of it.

Rhinestone Eyes, what should have been the new single:
