Get Up Get On Down EP – Turbo Fruits

I got into Turbo Fruits late in the game, at least compared to most people I know in Nashville. But hey, was it ever cool to be right on time for something? Nah, so I’m not worrying about it. For those who don’t know, the band is led by Jonas Stein (ex-Be Your Own Pet) and hails from Bellevue, Tennessee. Other members included ex-the Tits members Dave McCowen and Matt Hearn along with Kingsley Brock.

If I could describe Turbo Fruits sound the best, I’d say that they were the bastard sons of the Ramones who probably grew up smoking weed to CCR and drinking with the Eagles of Death Metal. If you can get that, then you probably have a good idea of what to expect. This E.P. is a good intro for anyone who wants to know what the band sounds like. Tracks like “Get Up Get On Down” and Stein’s tour journal on tape “On the Road” are straight off of 2009’s Echo Kid. No changes made to them, but these tracks still kick ass. No need to fix what isn’t broken.

The best track on the EP is definitely “Colt 45”. The song has an outlaw-like melody and seems to be about Jonas’s love of guns. It’s worth the price of the EP alone if you don’t have a record player cause it’s the only way to get the track otherwise (or at least until the new album drops). Another standout track is definitely “I’m Not a Lady”, which is a strange song about cross-dressing but has a catchy Kinks-like riff. Sounds like a cross between the Strokes and King Khan and the Shrines.

Anyways, if you’re a newcomer, this E.P. is a good intro. All five tracks are pretty solid and will help you get a good idea of what they sound like. If you get a chance to see them live, do it. I’ve seen them 3 times and it hardly ever gets old. Check em out:
