Mini Mansions – Mini Mansions

Wow. And I thought the E.P. they put out in 2009 was awesome. With the release of this puppy, Mini Mansions did what many other bands unfortunately don’t do: make a great second impression. This album’s proof of it.

After hearing Jubilee and seeing Shuman play the shit out of bass in Queens of the Stone Age, I can definitely say I expected something heavier than this. But it’s kind of like expecting a hamburger but getting delivered a steak instead. Unexpected at first, but totally better so we’re not bitching. The band’s songs ooze influence from the Beach Boys on the track “The Room Outside” to having Beatles sounding piano lines in “Majik Marker”. Shuman’s vocals can easily be compared to the late great Elliott Smith’s but that’s not a bad thing, because it doesn’t sound like he’s trying to imitate him.

The album has a psychedelic pop feeling to it. “Monk” half functions on Shuman’s vocal melodies during the chorus which helps make a lot of the lyrics catchy as hell. Zack Dawes and Tyler Parkford, musicians from L.A., provide fantastic piano lines, guitar melodies and backing vocals on each track to create the band’s psychedelic pop sound. They continue to do so on a better version of “Seven Sons” and on “Kiddie Hypnogogia”.

It’s cool how much better the polished versions of these songs sound, especially when if you didn’t have the E.P., only a few of these tunes were listenable on youtube just a few months ago. Hopefully this album will get the attention it deserves, because it is one of the most unique albums to come out in a while. Maybe if we’re lucky, Shuman will bring these dudes out on the road with Queens of the Stone Age, in which case, they better stop into Nashville.

But anyways, listen to the album for yourself below and see what you think. It’s definitely not for everyone, but those who dig nods to the proper people will definitely think it’s something cool.
