Dye It Blonde – Smith Westerns

I hadn’t heard this record yet, but I was already kind of excited for it. Then again, I’m willing to give any band who are from Chicago and fans of Oasis AND Nirvana a fair chance. These dudes are my age, yet they already have a record and a tour with MGMT under their belts. Damn, I feel like a bum. But anyways, lets talk about the music.

I heard a couple of songs off of their first record. It sounded a lot more like a garage rock record with hints of a glam rock record underneath it. On this record, they flipped it around. It sounds like a glam rock record with hints of garage rock underneath it. And I like it better this way. The mellow songs like “Still New” remind me of stuff like Bowie’s “Soul Love” off of Ziggy Stardust. I get the calm and peaceful vibes, but like Bowie’s stuff, you never get uninterested with it or lost in the mellowness.

There’s just so much I like about this record. They seem like a bright band. Even when they’re singing about dying young in the conveniently titled “All Die Young,” they manage to turn the melancholy song into an intoxicating tribute filled with reverb guitar licks and bright singing.  Some of the guitar solos even bear some resemblance to Noel Gallagher’s solos, especially the ones on the single “Weekend”, and on one of my favorites, “Smile.”

My favorite at the moment is gonna have to be “End of the Night.” The track starts out guitar heavy, but gravitates into being piano driven with subtle hints of Britpop. The synth pad combined with the cymbal heavy drum track during the chorus give the song a real euphoric feel, and I think that’s what I like most about it. It does what any song worth remembering does; it paints a pretty picture.

The only track I can say I’m not a fan of is “Dance Away.” The lyrics are kinda dumb and I don’t like the hints of disco during the chorus. Disco’s dead dudes. It just a tacky throwaway track in my book or at most, a shitty b-side. Oh well, 9/10 isn’t bad at all.

2011 has just started and all, but I’m gonna be cocky and go ahead and say this will probably be one of the best records of the year. I’m bummed that I’m probably gonna be in Atlanta when they come to the End the 28th, but you never know. If they’re at a city near you, check them out.
