PUJOL Interview

It seems like the music world is starting to shift their magnifying glass over to the South as bunch of bands are starting to get well deserved (well, most of them at least) attention nationwide. With a Jack White produced single and a discography that’s getting longer than my “to-do-list” (trust me, that shit is long), it’s no surprise that PUJOL is one of these bands. Fronted by Daniel Pujol, the band’s southern-brewed punk rock has been popping up in a lot of cool places. We asked him a few questions this past week and he gave us some pretty funny answers. The dude’s got wit.  Anyways, here we go:

1. When did you realize you wanted to make music?

Probably about the 6th grade.

2. Why did you start the band?

Well, I kept on starting bands, then they’d run out of steam, take a break, or break up. So I decided to start booking and recording myself as PUJOL with whoever would play with me so I wouldn’t have to throw away a bunch of songs and write brand new ones all over again, like every 6 months. Now I can keep moving forward.

3. What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen on tour?

I saw a dog act like a man, and a man act like a dog.

4. What’s the most backwards town you’ve played in?

Man, I don’t even know anymore.

5. How’d you get into punk rock?

Well, I was in 10th grade Biology, and this dude said he was starting a band, and I said, can I be in it, and he said, “well do you believe in stuff? Like social justice? It’s a punk rock band.” Then I went to the library and searched “Punk+rock” and came across some college kid’s essay about the Situationist International and the Sex Pistols, and how it was essentially performance art that politicized consumption, and then I started getting into, from that angle.

6. What’s your day job?

I am a student in an online Masters program and I work part time at a YMCAesque youth venue in Nashville called Rocketown.

7. What have you been listening to, reading or watching lately?

8. The Beatles or the Stones? How come?

You need them both, it’s like Yin and Yang, or peanut butter and jelly.

9. If you could wipe one band from existence, who would it be?

The worst one.

10. What was your first rock n roll concert (the one that blew you away)?

Tom Petty

11. Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, and Oprah? You gotta fuck one, marry one and kill one. GO!

I don’t even know. But I do know that I would probably marry Palin, so she would heel to my God given manly superiority and I’d order her as my faithful wife to stop politics and start a home decor blog.

12. Words of wisdom?

Being polite is way more important than being cool.

Thanks Daniel! If you haven’t yet, check out his music on his myspace or some of the videos I’ve posted below.
