“Mess Around” 7-Inch EP – Trent Fox & the Tenants

The good folks at Kind Turkey Records sent me this EP the other day. I had no idea who Trent Fox & the Tenants were, but since KT has a good track record, I gave it a shot.

After a couple of listens, I dug bits of the guitar and bass on each track. A lot of cool bass lines during the verses and the occasional cool guitar fill. However, aside from the occasional cool bits, nothing took me over.

The problem with this EP is this. It’s got a lot of cool things in each song, but aside from Mess Around and Sounds Fine to Me, it doesn’t have any other stand out tracks. It’d be a solid single with just those tracks. The rest just aren’t anything too special and become skippable after a few listens. It’s feels like being stuck in fifth gear on a road trip. There’s a lot of cool little shit along the way, but since you’re speeding and not taking a breather, you don’t remember much aside from the beginning of the road and the end of it. I don’t know. Maybe those tracks just didn’t click for me the way they were supposed to.

I’m on the fence about this band right now. I’ll make my final call when they release something new and that hopefully packs a bit more punch. Check out the tracks below and make up your own mind.
