GB City – Bass Drum of Death

It’s pretty rare when you find a decent two-piece band. If the chemistry isn’t there or one member has to pick up the slack (with the exception of the White Stripes), the music just isn’t good. With that said, why didn’t someone show me this record sooner? It’s badass.

These two dudes, John and Colin (the guitarist/singer and drummer respectively), are from Mississippi. All of the material is written by John. He pulled a Wavves and recorded the whole thing on a computer with only a USB Microphone. It sounds cleaner than Wavves because of that.  John writes about cool shit like drugs, stealing shit, hooking up with religious girls, Elvis and the devil. He’s definitely helping Fat Possum carry on their winning streak. This album is one of the best lo-fi garage rock albums I’ve heard all year. Its got catchy riffs and the drums are excellent and help the sound grow; a rare feature of most bands like this.

The only track I can say I didn’t dig off the bat was the opener “Nerve Jamming,” but by the time the record got halfway the track “Get Found”,  I was hooked. The problem with most high charged albums like this is they often suffer from an overload of too much awesome. It happens. It feels like you’re in 5th gear the whole trip. However, this band manages to maneuver around that problem pretty successfully and keeps the album interesting from front to back.

Anyways, give the album a spin when you get a chance. Check out the videos I posted below for a good idea of what they sound like. Tour dates are there too. Honestly, from how awesome this stuff sounds on record, I can only imagine how badass it is live. Thinking about that Memphis date, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
