Suck It and See – The Arctic Monkeys

Sometime before they recorded Humbug, the Arctic Monkeys learned how to be cool. They started putting out more riff heavy songs, imagery laden lyrics and seemed like all around cooler people. I slept on Humbug when it first came out but gave it another chance earlier and realized it was pretty good. With that and the release of Alex Turner’s excellent solo EP for Submarine, for the first time ever, I was excited about something the band was doing. The new album, Suck It and See, leaked the other day so I couldn’t help but cut summer school (okay, that I could help) and give it a listen.

The album opens with “She’s Thunderstorms.” It’s a skippable track. I can dig the guitar melodies and some of the lyrics during the verses, but what kills the track for me is the chorus. The buildup and the drums remind of a Muse song I can’t put my finger on. And that’s not a good thing. “Black Treacle” is not bad, but not great. After the disappointing start, it’s not what we needed. “Brick By Brick” is perfectly titled. Many critics of the band are complaining that the lyrics are not Turner’s brightest. However, his sense of humor may have unknowingly placed this track here, as it helps rebuild the album’s credibility brick by brick. It’s swagger helps jump start the album’s flow and gets it rolling again.

The album’s first single “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” is a great follow up to the cool melody track “The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala.” They’re making it pretty clear at this point that they’re attitudes have changed and are pretty far away from “Fluorescent Adolescent.” “Library Pictures” absolutely kills it. Between the chaotic drums and guitar solos during the chorus and Turner singing “Gimme an eeny, meeny, miney moe/Or an ipp, dipp, dog-shit rock and roll” (non-sensical? Yeah, but his delivery of it is awesome) the song’s one of my favorites on the album. Damn, these dudes finally figured out how to write awesome songs. “All My Own Stunts” builds on the energetic flow with the help of Josh Homme’s backing vocals.

“Reckless Serenade” has grown on me since I last heard it. The best part of the track is hypnotic but gentle guitar solo at the end. It’s one of the prettiest tracks on the album, it’s only competition being the next track, “Piledriver Waltz.” I hate to be that guy, but I do prefer Alex Turner’s solo version cause it has more heart. Not saying this is bad at all though. Quite the opposite. The full band cover this version with spacey guitar melodies and cymbal-heavy choruses while Turner’s lyrics are still brilliant. The spacey guitar melodies translates over to “Love Is A Laserquest.” Yeah, the name is dumb, but it’s a good compliment to “Waltz.” The album closes out with title track “Suck It and See” and “That’s Where Your Wrong.” Both tracks are more pop-oriented and energetic and make the album go out on good standards.

Overall, I can say I dig this album a lot and my respect for the Arctic Monkeys has been growing. They’re pulling a sort of reverse Kings of Leon. While KOL started off with albums with stronger songs, as their reputation and fame grew, the music took a hit and became shit. While the Arctic Monkeys started out as shit, as they’ve gotten bigger, their music has gotten better. It’s cliched to say, but it really will be interesting to see what’s up next.

Get my favorite two tracks “Library Pictures” and “Piledriver Waltz” HERE.
