Jesse Hughes Becomes Boots Electric, Releases Debut in September

Jesse Hughes is one of the greatest living frontman. Inspired by the antics of Little Richard and buddy/bandmate Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age), Hughes has lead his band, Eagles of Death Metal, through blazen performances with sexy guitar solos and a general “let’s get it on” stage attitude for over ten years. While Homme put Eagles on the backburner to do other projects, Hughes has mostly stayed quiet until the next Eagles album. Until now.

It had been rumored that Hughes had been crafting a solo album filled with more hooks than a fisherman’s boat for years. The Hughes camp and numerous friends have started confirming its existence in the past two years. Even Buddyhead founder Travis Keller spoke/tweeted/whatever-the-fuck that his new label, Miracles, would put out a 7” single by Hughes, entitled Boots Electric (Hughes’ nickname). That was back in January. And then everything went quiet for a good bit until today.

Hughes released a track today called “Boot Electric Theme” from the upcoming album, and it’s just what we expected/needed. With the help of Brody Dalle (Spinnerette, married to Homme), Hughes delivers a song that doesn’t sound like Eagles, but has the same rock n’ roll swagger underneath it’s disco disguised sound. It’s only one track, but it sounds like Hughes accomplishes what many solo artists can’t: he makes a different sound from his other band, but keeps the energy.

The album is going to be called Honkey Kong and is set for September 20th release on Dangerbird Records. I can’t fucking wait for that and the tour that will follow. If Hughes is this awesome on record, I can’t wait to see how he showcases this stuff live. It’s gonna be great.

You can grab the track below and check out some of Hughes’ other stuff.
