Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Unknown Mortal Orchestra

A bunch of bands I dig (Smith Westerns, Crocodiles, Yuck) have been mentioning this band a lot lately. At first, I was skeptical. I didn’t think it was a coincidence that all of those previously mentioned bands happen to be on Fat Possum Records along with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. But I decided to give it a chance because the label has an ear for good acts (besides Band of Horses and TENNIS). As it turns out, the other Fat Possum bands might not have been trying to just promote the label after all.

The band picture above didn’t help my skepticism at all. It was a tough call, but I decided not to judge a book by its cover (but seriously, the dude in the middle looks like he stepped right out of Look at this fucking hipster.com). It was when they describe their sound as “Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone, and RZA jamming on some kids’ TV theme too dark to ever be broadcast,” that I realized I had to see what the hell they were talking about. That or what drugs they were taking.

In under 30 minutes, the band’s fusion of psychedelic licks and catchy drum beats delivers a couple of cool and interesting songs. From the first listen, it was already obvious what my favorites were. I was amused from the beginning with the drums and bass line on “Ffunny Friends” and the guitar riffs and hooks on both “Through Ballune” and “Nerve Damage.” After another listen, I dug the funk influence on “How Can U Luv Me” while the closing tracks “Strangers Are Strange” (whose bassline kinda recalls the Beatles “Baby, You’re A Rich Man”) and “Boy Witch” resonated a lot stronger than before. If Tame Impala made an album with a 60’s feel to it, I could see it sounding very similar to this.

So yeah, the band might look like a trio of dipshits, but they know how to write pretty good songs and help Fat Possum continue their winning streak. Don’t miss out like I almost did. The album’s definitely more than worth a meager 30 minutes. It was released yesterday and available to buy HERE and HERE. If you’re like me and broke as a joke, SPIN has the whole thing streaming right HERE. Too lazy to click anymore links? Check out some of their songs below.

Lead singer/songwriter/dipshit is Ruben Neilson, former member of NZ power-pop outfit The Mint Chicks (check em out, have some killer albums) before they has a spectacular on-stage split.. Love the production on the album, plus the songwriting is solid
