Nevermind Goes Super Deluxe

It’s been 20 years since Nirvana released Nevermind and shook the collective music world. The impossible had happened: in a relatively short time, 3 scruffy-looking youngings (who looked like they should be pumping gas) went from banging out tunes in their garage to banging out tunes in stadiums. And as everyone from SPIN Magazine to Rolling Stone go on about how the album is a classic (even though Stone said it was so-so when it first came out) , Universal Records is doing their own thing. On September 27th, the label is reissuing it with some decent extras.

In a move that can be seen as money-grubbing, the label has decided to reissue the album in a few formats: a four-CD/one-DVD box set, a two-CD deluxe edition, a one-CD remaster, a four-LP set, and as a digital download. The two-CD set includes the album remastered, b-sides, previously unreleased BBC sessions, demos and rehearsal recordings. However, it’s the boxset that really catches my eye. It includes the “Devonshire Mixes” (the album mixed entirely by Butch Vig), a live DVD/CD of the 1991 Halloween Show and a 90-page book.

Sounds pretty sweet. The only problem is that that sucker is about $150 (that’s where the money-grubbing part seems really obvious). C’mon now. Since Courtney Love and the label are both always trying to squeeze whatever they can out of Kurt’s legacy, I can’t say I’m too surprised. Still, I hope that DVD comes out separately because that show has a pretty good reputation for being one of the band’s best shows. Also, I don’t want to support Courtney Love’s smack habit more than I need to.

For a complete tracklist of the box set, check it out below.  If you want an even decent box set for free, you can check out this bootleg called The Chosen Rejects. It’s available over here. 3 videos I dig are below as well.
