The Underground Youth Are Pretty Fucking Cool

I had never heard of this band until recently. My introduction to them came from their song, “The Morning Sun,” which was featured on a playlist that Travis Keller of Buddyhead.com put together. I was hooked on the track. The melody was undeniable and it was different from most psych music running through the veins of the genre nowadays like Night Beats (who are pretty cool) and the Paperhead (fuck off).  It can put you in a trance if you’re not too careful and to be able to do that sonically without the influence of drugs is a rare treat nowadays. See what I mean below. The video is fucking cool too. I want to live fast, die young and go out in a three-piece white suit too.

The Morning Sun – The Underground Youth

After I heard that, I gave a couple of songs on their bandcamp a listen. A little background on the band: they are from Manchester, England, home of legendary acts like Joy Division, the Smiths, the Buzzcocks and of course, motherfucking Oasis. It’s the brain-child of Craig Dyer and a bunch of other musicians he collaborates with. They define themselves as a mixture of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Velvet Underground musically with the lyrical approaches of Bob Dylan and the noise of Jesus and Mary Chain and I think that’s pretty accurate. My favorite album of theirs just happens to be the one that “Morning Son” appears on, Sadovaya. It’s got the most hits in my opinion and I wish I had the money to pony up and buy it digitally (cough, cough, someone send me that shit). You can listen to the album below along with a few of their other songs. Check em out now, peeps. This is good shit.
