Spiritualized Are On American Soil

I’m fucking stoked for the first time in a couple of weeks. Tomorrow, I cross the threshold and become 22 years old. Considering I thought I’d never make it past 21 without at least a little bit of brain damage (then again, that’s debatable at this point), I keep outliving myself and defying expectations. I wasn’t really looking forward to it to be honest. Sure, it’s always cool to get free drinks for a day, but the days of milestone birthdays pretty much passes after 21. However, when it was announced that Spiritualized, a band that I have gotten into a lot in the past few months, was playing in Atlanta on my birthday, I decided to create my own milestone. I’m gonna go float in space.

A quick rundown of the band for those who don’t know: imagine a combination of the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, and the Beach Boys shot straight into space like the first space chimp. Jason Pierce has consistently created great albums despite numerous fallouts between drugs and illness (dude survived double pneumonia AND chemo-therapy). In today’s music world, it’s hard to find bands that manage to forge all of their influences together to make something truly innovative. After a 2 year mixing process, he finally released the band’s latest LP, Sweet Heart Sweet Light. If you haven’t picked it up yet, do it. It’s one of the year’s finest and definitely the best thing the band’s done since 1997’s Ladies and Gentlemen, We’re Floating in Space. From start to finish, the record is for the best of times, the worst of times and everything in between. Gospel choirs and organs conjure up familiar church vibes but the lyrics reveal that it is a church record for those in the purgatory that is space. Its well crafted and hasn’t left my iPod since it leaked. Check out the band playing on Letterman the other night:

Hey Jane (live on Letterman) – Spiritualized

And here’s another one from the album that has been in my head for a good bit. Can’t fucking wait to hear this one live tomorrow. It’s a bit of a downer, but it’s more about moving on after the shit hits the fan.

So Long You Pretty Thing – Spiritualized

I fucking love this music. Even at some of the downest (is that a word?) points of a song, it still makes you want to look forward into the future and remember that there is some more cool things on the horizon. Ok, maybe that was a bit cheesy and sounds like something you should have heard from a guidance consular in high school, but this is like that guidance consular on drugs. Ok, maybe I’m getting a bit too tacky now. Anyways, long story short, I’m stoked for tomorrow cause I’m sure it’s gonna be a show to remember. I’m just bragging because I finally can. I’m gonna float in space and most of you guys aren’t!

One more before I stop this pointless tirade. If you haven’t heard Spiritualized’s version of Spacemen 3’s “Walking With Jesus,” stop whatever you’re doing and listen to this right now. Yeah the quality is shit and you’re better off getting the version on Live at the Royal Albert Hall version, but hey, you get what you pay for. It’s become my new life motto. “It’s a long long time between now and my death/And I’ve gotta have my fun so I’ve chosen what’s best.” That’s what I’m fucking talking about.

I’d fucking die if they played that tomorrow, but who knows. Yo Spaceman, hook it up.
