Depeche Mode Ready For 2013

Depeche Mode are a weird bunch. I got exposed to them at a young age cause my dad blared their greatest hits for a solid year when I was about 12. I heard their best singles (like “Personal Jesus” and “John the Revolator”) to their cheesiest ones (you would think that “Just Can’t Get Enough” is too shitty to not be a joke, but then you realize these dudes are serious…). Aside from that one year, I didn’t start listening to them on my own til I was about 18. I picked up the two essentials: Violater and Playing the Angel.  I gained respect for them after that. Plus, Dave Gahan’s solo album from 2007 is also pretty badass as well. Then I heard Sounds of the Universe and aside from a decent single, I didn’t really get into it. Felt kind of phoned in. I missed them at Lollapalooza in 2009 partially because of that.  Sounds like I didn’t miss much as I was later informed Martin Gore mimes some of his parts to a guitar track. C’mon now. I get that you’re old, but miming is for Justin Bieber fucktards.  When they announced that they were going to be releasing a new album next year followed by a tour, I didn’t know what to expect. After a bit of time, I gave their new single “Angel of Love” a listen and actually dug it.

Angel of Love – Depeche Mode

I’m sure the comparison has been brought up in other reviews, but Gahan sounds a whole lot like Nick Cave on this one. Considering Cave has yet to embark on an electronic sound (he’s done free jazz punk, piano ballads and sleazy garage rock, but not electronic), this is probably the closet thing we’ll get. And I gotta say, I’m all for it. Can’t wait to see how the rest of this album turns out. No word on the title or release date, but the band has said that it will come out next year, followed by a tour of North America. Cool. Guess we gotta sit on our hands for a while. I don’t really get the Cave comparison but it sounds alright to me.
