Miss Polly Jean Harvey Gets Political

If you follow the news about Guantanamo Bay, you may have heard about Shaker Aamer, the last UK prisoner that despite being cleared by both Bush and Obama, still remains imprisoned. In protest of this, he has been carrying on this hunger strike for a few months to the point that the guards have been viciously force-feeding him. Touched by the issue, my favorite female singer of the 90’s has taken notice and decided to write a song about it. Protest songs are stuck in a weird territory nowadays, but I think this one is pretty damn good. Written from the perspective of Shaker, the self-titled song is simple in delivery (just Harvey and a guitar), yet hauntingly beautiful. PJ has a knack for that, which is probably why I fell in love with her as a younging. Anyways, you can hear and download the song below. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’ve thrown in my favorite song by her afterwards as a reminder of why she’s so cool.

Down By the Water – PJ Harvey
