Gorillaz Put Out a Brand New Single Not On Their Brand New Album

gorillazvideo-1496941263-640x330Is it 2010 again? I ask because I’m following an article about Wavves with an article about Gorillaz. Unless you’ve been living under a rock or in fucking Utah, you’ve probably heard Gorillaz’s latest, Humanz. Despite its array of amazing guests (Danny Brown, Vince Staples, Pusha T, Grace Jones, Savages’ Jehnny Beth, and Noel motherfucking Gallagher), it took me a minute to jump into the pool. Compared to Demon Days, the record felt like it lacked depth and was barely scratching the surface of the potential that past records had lived up to. This changed though. After repeated listens, I’ve come to the conclusion that Damon Albarn and co. have crafted an excellent party record. This isn’t Plastic Beach. This is, as Albarn described it, a record to celebrate the end of the world. In turn, it’s a record that most of us need right now.

Earlier last week, Gorillaz dropped a new single, “Sleeping Powder.” The song was written off the album dropped, but I find it more infectious than most of the tracks on the album. The beat, the piano melody, the in-out nature of the bass, and the trip of a music video all coalesce together for this kicker of a track. Listen for yourself below. Gorillaz are touring the States later this summer/fall, but if you didn’t buy tickets already, Stubhub or you’re shit out of luck.
